HUMANITY: A product of Civilization

Image
This blog is a little different from my other blogs, it's just a way of perceiving our live and our existence.  Tracing back the history of humans existence, we go back to early man- back to million years ago where survival was the prime motive of life. Human behaviour was quite different from today but also somewhat the same- if you look close enough. For survival early man would kill another man, dominate, steal from other. Marking territories and bordering, the implicit rule of ‘not entering the territory of another’. If we look closely to all this, we still have the same kind of behaviour but we show it in a civilized way. If we look at the present, we have laws and orders to keep us from killing each other, or stealing from others and for many more behaviours. If humanity was embedded in us, we wouldn’t need rules and laws. But they are here to control our innate behavior. A system was made to tame humans- democracy, dictatorship, monarchy- all these form of governm...

Spiritual awakening through Yoga

Everything we have done in our life so far has been in pursuit of a single thing: joy . If we had been born as any other creature on this planet, it would have been very simple. Our needs would have just been physical. A full stomach would have been equivalent to a great day. But when we came into this world as human beings, things changed. As soon as the problem of hunger gets resolved, an infinite other problems arise. For a human being, life doesn't seem to end with survival, life begins with survival. If we see today's generation, our survival process is better organised than it was before. We can buy or get anything we need even without stepping out of our house, this was never possible before. We are the most comfortable generation to have ever lived on this planet. But are we the most joyful? The most loving? Or the most peaceful? No. We are not. We tried our best to fix the outside world. But still, we are not happier than our ancestors. This is because we focused...

Connect with yourself

Image
A day has 24 hours and by subtracting the hour we spend on sleep, we spend around 15 hours awake. How much of it do we spend with ourselves? And what is our own importance for ourselves? Does the answer of these two match like are they congruent? Being congruent means that if you are important to yourself then you spend around an hour of a day with yourself. Then these two statements are congruent. But if you are important for yourself but don’t even spend 15mins of a day with yourself, then these two statements are not congruent.   Two steps towards connecting with oneself. First is to realize the importance of oneself   Why are we even important for ourselves? Well why shouldn’t we be important for ourselves? What’s their not to love and cherish? We should be the most important person in our own life. We should be our own priority.  S econd is to spend time with oneself .  In our busy lives we often underestimate our own importance and the importance o...

Be your own master (Part II)

Often our actions do not match our beliefs and our words. In psychology an attitude (belief about something) has three components- affect (emotions attached to the belief), behaviour (action) and cognition (the belief itself). Surprisingly our behaviour is not merely governed by our beliefs, it’s governed by the belief about that behaviour. So believing in something and acting on that thing becomes two separate entities. Which is why sometimes our words do not match our actions. Now to unite them, we need to form two separate but same beliefs. Like, don’t just tell yourself that you believe in it, say that you believe in doing it as well- that’s how you are unconsciously preparing your mind for that action.                    Now what about the times when you don’t know why you did something which diverges from your beliefs. What’s done is done and cannot be undone but the damage can be repaired. A routine...

Be your own master (Part I)

While we sit inside of our homes, we are totally ignorant of the other fraction of the world who are not very privileged like us. Where the other fraction struggles for a single meal every day, we complain about the luxuries our lives are missing. It is so easy to be self-occupied and not feel responsible for others when our wants and needs are never ending and there’s no control over it. But we must learn to manage it. If managing it can provide someone a meal for a day, isn’t it worth it? I believe that as a human it is our duty to care of others who has no one, I guess that’s what makes us humans. Animals fight for territory and hold grudges and so do we. What is that ‘distinctiveness’ which makes us different from animals? We have a higher functioning brain than them which should be our advantage but we are exploiting it to exploit others and everything around us. There is a greater need than ever before to bring a change for our own betterment, to right all the wrongs. Starting ...

Being Intelligent is not the same as being Educated

Image
Add caption Intelligence is one of the most studied topics in psychology yet there is so much confusion and misperceptions about intelligence. There are many definition of intelligence but none of them can define the whole concept of intelligence but the definition by Wechsler somewhat accumulate the aspects of intelligence.  "... the global capacity of a person to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with his environment." Every theorist of intelligence has put some light upon different aspects of intelligence so by relying on just one definition could lead to disastrous results. In educational institutions we often determine a person’s intelligence by their academic achievements therefore blurring the fine line between intelligence and education. Because of this made up overlap we often judge a person’s intelligence in a wrong way. Intelligence is a capacity, the ability to be able to learn new things and produce something, it cannot be evalu...
