The HOW of Therapy and What to Expect

Image
Therapy or psychotherapy is a treatment procedure of a mental disorder by its definition but it is not limited to just that. Psychotherapy goes beyond the treatment aspect of eliminating the symptoms. Therapy is also a means to understanding oneself, recognizing the inner potentials and tapping into the wide sea commonly known as self-actualization, forming a better connection and relationship with oneself as well with others, working through with past trauma, difficult feelings and emotions and finding a better perspective of life to live. People usually have ambiguity regarding therapy and the therapy process and have many questions about how it works and how talking is really going to solve their problems or treat their symptoms. All the questions and uncertain feelings are valid as it is a rather complicated process and seems almost magical to layman. The conventional treatment method involves medications and therapy doesn’t, which is what makes most people feel that it’s an ...

Do you believe in God?

Image
People have different beliefs when it comes to god, some people believe in god’s existence, and some doesn’t. For the ones who believe in god has different preferences as well. People have different gods that they believe in. ‘Belief’ word in itself is a very strong word. If you believe in god, then god exists but if you don’t god doesn’t exist. A belief gives you strength and will power, it’s an invisible force that pushes you. If you truly believe in something, that belief can help you, it motivates you. Belief is a reality to someone. A question often raises in psychology that what’s a psychologist’s stance in the concept of god. Is it good to believe in god or it’s detrimental for a person. A psychologist has a neutral stance regarding this during therapy. But a distinction is made whether this believe is delusional or not. If not delusional it can serve as quite beneficial for the person. Also, this belief can become counterproductive as well. When someone just sits and wait for...

The Past

Image
The past, what is about the past that we can not seem to overcome? It haunts us, holds us back, prevent us, clouds our judgement and blinds us. Most of the people enter therapy trying to cut the cord with the past or to get over it. People want to forget it like it never even happened. They don’t want to be bothered by it. But ask yourself, would you be the same person if you did not experience whatever you did, bitter or sweet. There’s a very common saying that I am going to repeat ‘everything happens for a reason’. There’s also a very common saying associated with it ‘everything happens for a reason, but I wish I knew the reason’ and there lies the answer. The reason, the meaning- that’s a key. One of the most famous psychologist Victor Frankl who worked immensely in the field of existential psychology wrote an eminent book called “Man’s search for meaning”. The book surrounds around his life at a concentration camp during world war II. He never tried to forget his past no ma...

Healing

Image
There are many types of healing, there’s physical healing and then there’s psychological healing, sometimes also refer to as soul healing or spiritual healing. Physical healing is quite common to all of us, but what is this psychological healing? Is it even important? What is a psychological wound? How do we get hurt psychologically? Psychological healing is the healing from past trauma or any event that was quite stressful. Anything that distress us can cause a wound to our soul or psyche. This wound cannot be seen but can be felt. It is manifested in certain behavioral tendencies such as losing hope easily, getting exhausted quickly, getting triggered easily, not able to sleep or eat, cannot concentrate, and many more. Our soul is wounded when we go through a breakup, when someone close to us passes away, when we lose a job or we have been a part of something traumatic. Our consciousness can also be wounded when we transition from one stage of life to another (such as from adolesce...

The Deceptive Social Media

Image
“There are only two industries that call their customers ‘users’: illegal drugs and software” -Edward Tufte Whenever you buy something new, don’t you interrogate about the product? Don’t you try to get all the information possible about it, all the pros and cons? But why do you do that? Because you are going to consume that product and you want the best, is that right? Now how much did you think before installing any of the social media apps? Did you try to think or investigate that how does it work? What are the pros and cons? You sure know all about the pros but how much do you know about the cons? So let me put a light upon how social works and manipulates human psychology. Artificial Intelligence If you are a consumer of this product then it’s very important that you are well versed with ‘artificial intelligence’. We all know what is human intelligence, the ability to learn, understand and adapt. Artificial intelligence is the intelligence of a machine. It’s is not na...

Regulating Emotions (part 2)

Image
Being conscious leads to being in control . It’s happens somewhat this way- 1.       You become conscious 2.       Then you know how you feel, how the situation is (you have analysed the situation and yourself) 3.       Logic and reason is embedded in us, it’s always there but earlier it was blinded by our emotions but this time it’s not 4.       Now you know what’s the right thing to do or say (you are totally conscious of whatever you are doing so you will be in control of expressing yourself) 5.       Emotions will be in control.   “I don’t know why I did what I did” If you think about it, it makes total sense. Like have you ever said “I don’t know why I did what I did”. It’s because you actually didn’t know why you did it, you were not aware of what you were doing and you just did without thinking about its repercussions. If you eve...

Regulating Emotions (Part 1)

Image
Sometimes we become so ignorant of things or so blind that the reality is right in front of us and we are not able to see it. Humans are very much driven by emotions, which is a good thing because it helps us in many ways and many others around us. But sometime they become the source of our problem and this happens when we are blinded by emotions. Let that emotion be love or anger or sadness or happiness. Anything in excess is damaging and so are good things. Like eating too much causes vomiting. Extreme happiness and euphoria is a mental illness.   Regulating emotions    The key solution here is “controlling emotions” or an even better term “regulating emotions”. This all comes under the concept of emotional intelligence which is as much important as any other form of intelligence.  We are never explicitly taught about emotional regulation and it’s believed that it comes with age as does wisdom. We spent our lives without knowing that how much weightage we ar...
